It is no secret that applying for an artist grant can at times be an overwhelming and confusing experience. Knowing where to start and what to include can be crucial to your success. Here are a few tips to help you put your best foot forward;
This is one of the most simple but effective tips to keep in mind. Artists should carefully read the application instructions to make sure they are eligible to apply. It is also equally important to understand what the objectives are to ensure they align with your own.
Important things to think about when planning your project:
What – What is the project and what will the community impact be? Define your project in detail and remember to clearly outline your objectives and goals to define your purpose.
Who – Who will be involved in the project and who are the target audience? Explain what your audience will gain from participating in this project.
Why – Why does this project need to happen? Here is where you need to sell, sell, sell. Explain in detail how your project links to your objectives.
How – How will it work and what resources will you need to accomplish your goals? Having a clear and realistic timeline and budget is crucial. If you are including any in-kind resources always confirm these beforehand.
If you are unsure if your project fits the guidelines, make the time to contact the grants administrator to discuss your ideas further. It is always better to ask questions directly plus they will be able to let you know if you are on the right track. That aside it is a great opportunity to network!
Also, reach out to friends and fellow artists and ask them to review your application. Chances are if it makes sense to them it will make sense to those responsible for assessing your application.
Good quality support material will give the grant accessor a much clearer idea of what you are writing about, so it is always good practice to provide as much relevant, good quality material as you can.
Make sure your budget balances, income must equal expenditure. It is also important to make sure your expenditure estimates are realistic and evidence based.
And finally practice makes perfect! Keep researching, perfect your images and artist statements and if you are unsuccessful seek feedback and always apply again.
