We had a chat with artist Chelsea Avila to talk about her exhibition 'Iridescence', inspiration and what to expect from the exhibition.
Chelsea is a Melbourne artist currently studying a Diploma of Visual Arts at RMIT. Chelsea’s work is centred around water-based mediums, especially watercolour. She also enjoys experimenting with drawing and other techniques.
Describe yourself in one sentenceI love to capture memories and things that spark wonder to me in art.
What is your chosen medium(s) and why?Watercolour. I try to strike a balance between control and spontaneity, letting the paint flow freely to create natural, unexpected marks on the page.
What can we expect from your exhibition? In this exhibition, viewers can experience the beauty of everyday scenes magnified through photography, watercolour, and gouache paintings. As you move through the space, you'll journey from scenes captured in the daylight to the golden hour of sunset and finally into the calm of night.
What do you want people to take away from your exhibition?I hope people leave the exhibition with a renewed appreciation for the beauty in everyday moments. Through the transitions from day to night, I want viewers to feel a sense of calm and reflection, recognizing how even simple scenes can hold so much inspiration that it can make a painting! I hope my work encourages them to pause and see the world around them in a more mindful, appreciative way.
What/who inspires you?I’m inspired by watercolour artists such as Kelogsloops, Thomas W. Schaller and Kate Bauer.
What is coming up next for you?I plan to keep going with exhibitions! I want to expand to doing commissions for people whether that be paintings of portraits, pets or places they love.
