Brimbank Midsumma Celebrations 2022

MCC Midsumma2022 MC Cwebgraphic300x200 1a

Fabulous and Impossible Exhibition by Tom Christophersen

Date: 28 January – 19 March

Location: Bowery Gallery, 33 Princess St, St Albans

Cost: No charge

The Bowery gallery presents ‘Fabulous & Impossible - The Cult of Leigh Bowery’, an exhibition featuring the visual art of Sydney-based queer artist and multidisciplinary pistol-whip Tom Christophersen.

Featuring a collection of new and pre-existing works, Christophersen’s beautifully camp and subtly strange portraiture and video work celebrates the impact of queer visionaries, especially Bowery, on his contemporary arts practice.

Parallels of persona and character, performance art and the ultimate subversion of popular culture through a queer lens echo through this glamorous and twisted body of mixed media works on paper, incorporating both drawing and painting.

‘Fabulous & Impossible - The Cult of Leigh Bowery’ is for lovers of meticulously made things which glory in the uncomfortable and underground, the shock of the spectacle, and the delicious way the queer community creates art on their own terms from their own lived experiences.

2022 is the five year anniversary of the opening of the Bowery Theatre and Gallery in St Albans. The Bowery Theatre was named after the late artist, Leigh Bowery who grew up in Brimbank. Leigh Bowery was one of the most influential international arts figures of the 80s and 90s. A celebrated fixture of the fashion, nightlife and avant-garde scenes in London and New York, he was known for his flamboyant get-ups, larger than life personality and bold performance art. As a creative space we are inspired by his legacy.

Join us as we celebrate the legacy of the inimitable Leigh Bowery with special guests Tom Bowery (father of Leigh) in conversation with Michael Winkler. Featuring a curated performance program by James Welsby, an art exhibition by Tom Christophersen and costumes by Adele Varcoe, Jane Morley and the local community.

Can art mend some part of our broken world? Is there a way that people grouped under an umbrella of oppression to live in unity despite intersecting differences? Can the small act of drawing, scribbling, writing or interacting with an artwork bring a community together?

This installation is for people whose answers often spurn more questions, who believe in the power of art. Gennivieve Collier: educator, conservative nightmare, painter, zine maker, jack of all artistic trades maintains her idealism (and naiveté), has invited collaborated both friends and hopes to with the viewer.

We invite you to the place she is most passionate about, the western suburbs, to help create an installation exploring forgotten people from the past and the potential of an unknown future.
