As part of Brimbank Council’s Pride Celebrations, the St Albans Community Centre is proud to present a special display of artworks and memorabilia celebrating the life and legacy of Leigh Bowery on loan from the Bowery-Ireland family.
Leigh Bowery (1961–1994), born and raised in Sunshine, left an indelible mark on the global arts scene. A visionary performer, fashion designer, nightclub personality, and muse, Bowery rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming a defining figure in the avant-garde movements of London and New York. His bold, boundary-pushing work challenged conventions and redefined the possibilities of identity, self-expression, and performance.
Bowery’s impact continues to resonate today. He influenced a generation of artists and designers, including Alexander McQueen, Lucian Freud, Grayson Perry, Boy George, and Lady Gaga. Known for his fearless spirit and uncompromising creativity, Bowery used art as a form of social commentary, often provocative, always unforgettable.
It is fitting that the theatre and gallery at St Albans Community Centre bear his name, honouring his deep connection to the area and celebrating his contribution to global culture. This display invites the local community and visitors alike to reflect on Bowery’s remarkable journey from Sunshine to the world stage and to be inspired by his unapologetic embrace of individuality and artistic freedom.
