From 2020, Brimbank City Council's Community Cultural Development team, with support from a Reimagined VicHealth grant delivered the project, Growing Plants for Country in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
It involved the participation of the Koorie Homework Club families who worked with Matt King from Indigenous Partnerships/Integrated Catchment Management to learn about growing food and habitat plants to be planted on country and at Westvale Community Garden. Each of the families received a propagation kit containing a grow house with potting mix and a list of seeds and under Matt’s guidance, and they planted them once they had reached sufficient maturity.
By engaging in this activity, with support, families felt a greater connection to Country and learnt new skills and knowledge pathways.
This project has gone on to be an influential part of connecting community to Country and the delivery of other greening projects including the Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre planting project and the Carey Street playground planting project. We hope to continue our work with Council's Parks Team to deliver more projects in the future.
