The Encounter follows Soledad, a Filipino migrant nurse in Melbourne, as she juggles the relentless demands of care: caring for elderly residents on night shift, caring for her teenage daughter April, and caring for her ailing mother in the Philippines. Soledad has built her life around survival, and though exhausted, remains funny, sharp-tongued and deeply loving. However, family tensions rise when buried questions about the past begin to surface, and the folklore stories she has long used to comfort her elderly patients begin to take on a different weight.
The Encounter is a performance-driven piece of physical theatre that merges folklore with contemporary themes, using a dynamic monodrama structure that investigates identity, political history, migration, and nationhood through the lens of folklore.
“Our aim is to reach the Filipino diaspora and also share our culture to the wider Melbourne audience, as we hope to add Filipino folklore to intercultural storytelling in Australian theatre.” - Ricardo Magno
