Shadi Abou Asleh is based in Naarm (Melbourne), with a practice spanning abstract and conceptual art, with a particular emphasis on texture and the passage of time. Through various materials and layering techniques, Shadi creates works that invite emotional engagement and reflection. These layers evoke a sense of continuity and transformation, offering space for personal interpretation and introspection. Growing up in Syria and immigrating to Australia in 2012, Shadi’s work is shaped by displacement and the contrast between these environments. This lived experience informs his ongoing interest in how time alters both material surfaces and perception. Working across painting and video, he employs repetition and accumulation to examine themes of change, routine, and memory. Whether building dense, tactile surfaces in paint or constructing frame-by-frame video sequences, his process is slow, deliberate, and meditative. The work invites quiet attention, engaging with the intangible qualities of time, grief, and resilience.
