A new mural now brightens up the laneway in Stark Place, Sunshine. The mural mixes contemporary elements and traditional portraiture creating a theatrical scene inviting the viewers to appreciate the beauty of diversity through a poetic narrative. The artwork portrays a woman surrounded by textiles in movement. Butterflies are incorporated as a symbol of transformation and connection to nature. The strong gaze of a strong woman giving birth to change and renewal becomes the focal point of this piece. It also relates to the heritage of the building, Michael’s Corner store - a haberdashery business selling predominately fabrics for theatre. The mural design was endorsed by local community group Kontiki Cultural Women’s Empowerment.
